RoadSavers, PavementSavers and RaynMakers from Rayner Equipment have earned their rugged reputation.
When Gordon Rayner, current CEO and founder of
    California Pavement Maintenance Company,
began his career in sealcoating in 1974, there
were two material choices: Jet Seal, a coal tar
sealer; or WalkTop, an emulsion aggregate
sealcoat reinforced with asbestos fibers. The
popular sealcoat machine at the time was a Ken
    Seal machine – a chain driven, three-wheel
    machine with front-wheel drive and a top-heavy
center of gravity just waiting for a hill or side slope
to show you what the laws of nature could really
    do!
Over the years both materials and machines have evolved. Coal tar disappeared from
the west coast and asbestos fillers soon followed. New equipment was gradually
introduced to the market – chains were eventually replaced with hydraulics and designs
with lower centers of gravity were introduced.
During this time Gordon and his brother Rich were modifying equipment for their own
construction company, California Pavement Maintenance Company, and began building
new machines out of necessity rather than choice.
“For three years, each new piece of slurry seal equipment we bought experienced major
breakdowns and calibration variances within the first weeks of operation. Frustrated, we
looked at the money we had spent purchasing those new machines and also the money
we spent fixing the breakdowns, not to mention the lost crew time. We knew we could
build better, efficient and more reliable machinery,” said Gordon.

Rayner Equipment Systems, a Sacramento-based designer and manufacturer of paving equipment, won an award this month for its exporting business from the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Rayner has been involved in international
trade since 1984 and now exports to 34 countries. Last year saw 36 percent of Rayner Equipment’s sales coming from exports.

Gordon and Richard Rayner of Rayner Equipment Systems.

How did you first become interested in foreign markets?
“We started building paving equipment for our own use to give our construction company a competitive advantage. In late 1984, (a Canadian firm) came knocking on our door and said we have been watching your crews and want to know how we can buy those. …We started manufacturing to sell. A major oil company helped us sell the equipment to Argentina, then Chile and Brazil. We had very little international marketing during that time.”

    What changed?
“In 1996 we sold over 50 machines to Thailand and started marketing around the world. We became known as a manufacturer and a systems educator — we teach our customers all the rock and asphalt technology. The key thing we have learned is to go slow with customers. Our industry requires lots of technical knowledge. If you go too fast and leave a customer high and dry, you will get a bad name and fail.”

What is the most difficult hurdle you have experienced in exporting, and how do you navigate it?
“You have to be careful in understanding the person on the other side of the fence. Do they truly understand what you are doing? For example, when the Chinese say ‘yeah,’ that actually means no. Understanding responses can only come from spending time in the country and dealing with the people one-onone.”

What are the different ways you market your export business?
“We market in a print trade magazine, but everything else is online. We focus on our website and ad positioning on Google. When someone does a search we pop up pretty early. We also have lots of YouTube videos so people can watch a real-life application of the machines and materials. This does most of the selling for us.”

Built for Performance, Built for Life!
    The ARC System
The Autonomous Rate Control system uses pressure sensing technology allowing for computer control of the spray  system application.  Once the Application Rate is Selected the calibrated ARC System will then only spray this selected application rate.  The intuitive nature of the system will set the maximum speed of the machine, such that the Operator may simply push the joystick all the way forward and the PavementSaver III will not outrun the set application rate
    • Operator can quickly select the application rate  on the Operator’s Screen
    • Control screen shows a visual machine status, machine speed and spray status

    Why use the ARC System?
The application rate of sealcoat is critical in doing a great job.  If applied too thick or thin it can lead to reduced longevity and
premature failure, extended curing times,  and even cracking.  This can significantly cost both the customer and contractor in wasted material, extra rework time and a loss in business.  The ARC system can help eliminate these problems as the operator can select the application rate that is best for the job, whether the existing surface is smooth, rough, or somewhere in between.
    Safety: Consider
    these safety features
    • Dual braking systems, hydrostatic operational brakes and enclosed two wheel wet disc brakes for emergencies and parking
    • Operator “dead man” shut down switch
    • Anti-slip technology
    • Machine will not move unless you are in neutral and in the operator’s seat
•If you leave the operator’s seat, the parking brakes automatically apply
    • Fail-safe brakes - If you lose engine power, blow a hose or lose hydraulics, the parking brakes will stop youautomatically even on a steep grade
    • The fully loaded PavementSaver III can safely climb grades – up to 16% higher with the turbo-diesel system
    • Hydrostatic braking through the full range of operation
    • Full forward to full reverse? If you suddenly move the joystick from full forward to full reverse, machine will buffer the change by slowing the machine before changing direction.
The patented RaynMaker Spray system gives operators the option to spray sealcoat from the spray bar or up to two hand wands. The entire system is designed to handle heavily filled sealcoat materials.
    • Spray bar starts at 8 ft. and can extend to 12 ft.
    • Best filtration in the industry through our patented spray bar filters: The primary filter has 952 cubic inches of volume and 339 square inches of filter face, the twin finish filters have 2,118 cubic  inches of volume with 1,620 square inches of filter face.
    • Pressure sensing technology keeps your application rate consistent despite changes in speed
    • All controls are located on the joystick and
        operator control panel
