REM is a global provider of surface engineering solutions.

REM Surface Engineering is the world’s leader in isotropic superfinishing technology with the experience/expertise to support your surface finishing or polishing project. REM’s ISF® Process is the ultra-precision application of our ISF® Technology for subtractively manufactured components.  Our technologies have been used for decades in the most critical gear and power transfer applications to generate low Ra surfaces with isotropic textures and ultra-high bearing ratios. ISF® Surfaces outperform essentially all other surfaces produced via machining/non-traditional machining in contact fatigue, scuffing, extreme conditions, break-in, and efficiency testing. Available via outsourced processing or as a technology installation without the inaccuracy or the inefficiency of mass finishing or the risk and cost of low roughness machining, the ISF Process is the optimal precision component polishing process. For high volume needs, the Rapid ISF® Process brings the same benefits with lower cycle times/WIP. Contact REM to start your project today.

 Press Releases

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Fort Worth, Texas – Bell Textron Inc. selects REM’s Isotropic Super Finishing process to enhance performance of critical components.

The Bell V-280 Valor has been selected as a project agreement holder for the competitive demonstration and risk reduction (CD&RR) effort as part of the U.S. Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) program.  This contract follows the successful U.S. Army led JMR TD program in which the V-280 achieved all program goals, demonstrating its speed by flying above 300 knots and demonstrating low speed agility attitude quickness per ADS-33F-PRF. The V-280 Valor has now demonstrated in flight testing that it has the raw control power in pitch, roll, and yaw maneuvers to meet the Army’s Level 1 Handling Qualities requirements, which is the highest performance standard for agility. This flight testing validates Bell’s engineering models and development processes to design, build, and test an air vehicle on an aggressive aircraft development schedule that meets Army performance requirements and delivers revolutionary capabilities to warfighters.

Bell selected REM as its preferred metal surface finishing supplier in 2012 for rotorcraft transmission gear applications.  This selection was made after nearly a decade of due diligence to validate REM’s best in class technology for flight-critical power transmission components.  Bell communicated to customers in 2015 regarding the extensive use of REM’s Isotropic Superfinishing Technology for key applications and Bell continues to utilize REM’s Technology for demanding new applications such as the V-280 Valor.

“Bell is a clear industry leader in one of the most exciting new markets to emerge in my lifetime.  REM is excited to support the growth and advancement of air travel as a key supplier to Bell,” said Justin Michaud, CEO of REM Surface Engineering.

Bell continues its iconic leadership in vertical flight with the development of the Nexus eVTOL Air Taxi.  Bell describes the Nexus as “the nexus of transport and technology and of comfort and convenience.”  The four-passenger air taxi designed for the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) market is projected to be available in the mid-2020s.

  • REM’s ISF® Process is the ultra-precision application of our isotropic superfinishing technology for subtractively manufactured components.  The ISF Process is a suite of chemically accelerated surface finishing and polishing technologies that generate low Ra surfaces with non-directional/isotropic surface textures and exceptionally high bearing ratios.  The ISF Process can be performed in a variety of standard and/or customized mass finishing apparatuses in order to execute REM’s unique superfinishing method.

Traditional, abrasive-only mass finishing technologies suffer from long cycle times, higher final surface roughnesses, and increased geometric alterations to parts with defined geometries and micro-geometries.  REM’s chemically accelerated technology eliminates these drawbacks, allowing reduce cycle times and low roughness surface finishes (Ra<0.1 µm/4 µin or lower). REM has a broad range of alloy processing experience.  REM’s ISF Process has an unparalleled range of performance benefits including increased resistance to contact fatigue, bending fatigue, and scuffing, and drastically reduced friction.
